Verses 1-4
-
To preach the gospel is to manifest God's Word so that people can receive the eternal life which God promised before time began!
-
Know the gravity of the task you've been given, begin entrusted with such a great message (1 Thessalonians 2:4). Share the Word boldly and accurately!
-
Verses 5-9
-
See teaching on 1 Timothy 3 for details.
-
Titus adds a detail about teaching that's not present in 1 Timothy, which is that elders/pastors must have sound doctrine and be able to communicate it well to those who contradict the Word.
-
If you appoint leaders, look for men that know how to answer objections to what the Word says, being able to speak both gently and persuasively.
-
Verses 10-16
-
False doctrine causes more to go astray than almost anything else you can imagine.
-
So, in your own community, to protect others, if you notice people spreading false or misleading doctrine, sharply correct them without hesitation (Galatians 2:5). Show the seriousness of the wrong in so doing.
-
-
Verse 15. In this context, legalists were spreading false doctrine similar to what we read about in 1 Timothy 4:1-3—commanding people to abstain from things that were not sinful at all.
-
People who think purely will see what God has created as good. But religious people, who think that good things—things to enjoy—are impure and forbidden, only prove that their own minds are corrupted (their thinking is impure).
-
Verse 16. And so, they profess to know God, but in their works they deny the gospel.
-
So, pay attention to people's works, not their claims, to know what they truly believe.
