Job 28

Verses 1-11

  • Job says all this to show to what lengths men have gone to acquire wealth of gold, silver, and precious stones. He explains that mining is an arduous and dangerous endeavor. It has required men to travel deep into the dark recesses of the earth, away from any other human or even any animal.

Verses 12-28

  • Verses 12-22. Gold can be found, but finding wisdom and understanding is another matter. No matter how hard you search, or how much wealth you have, wisdom cannot be found anywhere in the earth, nor can it be purchased with money.

  • Verses 23-28. God knows wisdom, for by His wisdom He created all things (Proverbs 3:19). Therefore, wisdom can only be given by God (Proverbs 2:6). How do we receive wisdom from God?

    • Fear God, and you will be given wisdom. Obey God, and you will be given greater understanding.

    • Many believers fail to realize that obedience to the Word allows us to receive deeper wisdom and understanding. Gaining wisdom is not merely a matter of study, but choosing to turn away from sin in obedience to the Word. Turning away from sin is the use and practice of wisdom and the fear of God (Proverbs 8:13). And when we put them into practice, we will be given more (Hebrews 5:14).
