Psalm 101

Verses 1-2

  • There's been a lot of talk about singing praises to God, and this is good, but it can't stop there. If we want to experience true closeness with God, it requires a holy behavior and thought-life—a pure heart (Matthew 5:8).

Verses 3-8

  • If you want your heart to be pure, it begins with how you use your eyes. “Set nothing wicked before your eyes” (verse 3) (also see Isaiah 33:15 and Matthew 6:22-23).

    • Don't knowingly watch or look at anything evil, or anything that depicts evil, whether that be in shows, movies, relationships, etc. And especially do not seek to entertain yourself with sinful content.

  • Instead, hate sin, hate evil, and share companionship or brotherhood with godly people. Don't try to form close friendships with perverse or arrogant people—people who live in sin (Proverbs 13:20). Your friendships show your character, so choose the kind of close friends that you want representing you and your faith.

    • You can have friendship with unbelievers for the purpose of evangelism, but do not pursue close friendship or companionship with them

      • The people that comfort you when you're hurting, correct you when you're in the wrong, and advise you when in challenging circumstances...these people must be believers. But look for this kind of friendship with unbelievers, and it will be a harmful burden to you (2 Corinthians 6:14, 1 Corinthians 15:33).

    • Always remember that the friends you choose will hugely influence your ability to live pleasing to God, or not, so choose close friends that will stir you up towards greater love and good works (Hebrews 10:24).
