Psalm 54

Written on 05/09/2024

Study this alongside 1 Samuel 23—the historical context for this Psalm.

Verses 1-3

  • There will be times when strangers—even people you don't know—will be against you. One day the whole world will be against believers (Matthew 24:9).

    • They do this because they disregard God and reject Him. Understand that people reject believers because they reject God (John 15:18-21)

    • The best thing we can do is pray, and know that God will save us. The Holy Spirit in us is proof that God will save us.

Verse 4

  • God helps us, and He helps us by sending people who want to help us.

    • Value your relationships with other believers, and keep them close, as they will be God's help to you in time of need.

Verses 5-7

  • Remember that sinning is laboring for the cause of evil and committing injustice against God's kingdom. And those who do not know God nor follow Christ will be compensated with punishment for their sins.

  • God will avenge every evil work. When this happens, we will have rest (2 Thessalonians 1:6-7). Look forward to this day!

    • Verse 7. It is ok to desire that the wicked are punished, as this is a day that will bring rest, but for now, pray for the wicked to repent, while they still can (Matthew 5:43-44). God Himself also desires that evil is destroyed, but He is patient for people to repent, because He loves them.

  • Verse 6. Consider how much good God has done, and will do, and freely thank Him for His works. Don't think of praise or thanks to God as an obligation. Do it with a cheerful heart.

    • Offer sacrifices to God—in worship—by helping others and sharing with others(Hebrews 13:15-16).
