Acts 23

Verses 1-5

  • Respect all authorities, and do not insult them (Exodus 22:28). Be careful how you speak to them.

    • Even if an authority does something wrong to you, and you know they're wrong, wanting to rebuke the action, hesitate to do so if it will be perceived as an insult.

  • Notice also that Paul spoke quickly, without knowing who he was speaking to. But he admitted his wrong quickly, as soon as he found out that the man was the high priest, apologizing for his words.

    • Don't speak too quickly, and apologize quickly if you do misspeak

Verses 6-22

  • Verses 6-9. Notice that when Paul found out that the council was a mix of Pharisees and Sadducees, he spoke to their differences to cause them to argue with each other (“a house divided cannot stand”). This turned their attention away from Paul and bought him some time. This single comment from Paul (verse 6) likely saved him harsher persecution or even death.

    • Be wise and careful in your speech when surrounded by people who seek to harm you. This could save your life!

  • Verses 10-11. Remember that God will keep you alive until you do what He has willed for you to do. Don't be afraid of death or attacks against you!

Verses 23-35

  • Because Paul was a peaceable, law-abiding citizen, Roman law protected him even when the Jews wanted to kill him.

    • Be a lawful person, and don't desire to defy your government. This will bring you favor with the authorities, and it will protect you in times of need (Romans 13:3).
