Psalm 58

Verses 1-5

  • David begins by describing the wicked and the origin of their sin. As corroborated in the New Testament (Romans 3 and Romans 5), sin begins as early as conception (Psalm 51:5).

    • This is because we are conceived and born with a sinful nature inherited from Adam. Categorically, all of us are “the wicked” until we repent and believe in Jesus, since we're all born with the sinful nature.

Verse 6-10

  • All of the wicked will be punished in what David calls a “living and burning wrath”.

    • The flames of God's wrath are living because they come from the very presence of God Himself.

  • But the righteous will have joy in seeing the judgment of God upon the wicked, and one could say that this is even part of our reward (Psalm 59:10, 54:7).

    • Practically, praise God for His justice rendered to the wicked, and for the relief that comes when the wicked are judged. But, like God, keep a love for all people(John 3:16), and wish for all people to come to repentance and salvation (2 Peter 3:9).
