Psalm 51

Verses 1-3

  • As believers, the blood of Jesus blots out our sins.

    • However, do confess your sins to God. Admit when you do wrong (1 John 1:9).

Verse 4

  • Although all sin also affects people, God is the one that is hurt most by our sin. Our sins are against Him, more than anyone else

    • When the day comes that all people see how much they hurt God, then they will know that they deserve God's judgment! In this moment everyone will know that God is fair.

Verses 5-6

  • We are born with a sinful nature we inherit from our parents. From the moment of conception there is the sinful nature.

    • For this reason, God desires our nature—our inner selves—to be transformed. Knowing the truth of the gospel and being born again fulfills this need!

Verses 7-11

  • To apply these verses to your life as a believer, understand that the blood of Christ has purged and cleansed you from your sin (Hebrews 9:14,

  • And remember that God will never take away His Spirit from you! After being saved, as long as you keep your faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit will be with you forever (John 14:16).

    • But as you make mistakes, pray for the Word and the Spirit to cleanse your mind from any sinful tendencies.

Verses 12-15

  • Understand that the Holy Spirit strengthens you, and keeps you saved by His power. Remember to have joy in this salvation (1 Peter 1:5-6).

    • If you have joy, you will be much bolder and more effective in sharing the gospel with others and bringing them to salvation also!

Verses 16-17

  • God wants us to be broken and repentant in our hearts. God wants you to truly care that you have sinned against Him, and He wants you to sorrow so that you actually change your ways2 Corinthians 7:10.

    • But don't just be sorry. Choose to change! See Hebrews 12:16-17.

    • A heart that is truly repentant God will respect. The right heart is more valuable than any amount of religious penance. Remember this!

Verses 18-19

  • Pray for God to build up His own church! Why?

    • By God's own grace and power we are able to live pleasing to Him. We need His help! Pray for His help!
