Psalm 97

Verses 1-6, 8-9, 12

  • Knowing that God is in control over all creation and greater than all other gods (false gods) is reason to rejoice. Every time that you think of God, give thanks. Make a habit of this.

  • The most powerful natural forces on earth—clouds and wind, fire and lightning—they are directed by the hand of God. Even mountains, as great as they are, melt at God's command. Experiencing this brings a healthy fear of God.

    • Creation itself testifies of God's reign as King of the universe (Psalm 19:1). Look at creation around you carefully, pay attention to the details, and give thanks for them. This will help you see the glory of God!

Verse 7

  • All those who worship false gods will be put to shame because even the false gods will worship the true God in the end. Every creature—whether angel, demon, terrestrial or celestial—all will bow the knee and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10-11).

    • So, in part, because of their shame for hastening after false gods, many will have their sorrows multiplied (Psalm 16:4).

Verses 10-11

  • The best way that we can love God, as we take joy in His power, is to hate evil. One's love for God is not growing if the hatred for sin is not growing. And a hatred for sin is not shown in emotional intensity, but in a relentless rejection of any known sin. Of all things that can be hated, hate sin. Fear God, and flee from sin (Proverbs 8:13), and then you can know confidently that you will remain saved from death.

  • In choosing to flee from sin and be obedient to God, you are sowing light and joy for the future. You will find later that “your whole body will be full light” (Matthew 6:22).

    • In other words, choosing to do what is right, now, will lead to the greatest joy and blessing later. Doing what is right might feel difficult in the present, but remember that unspeakable, energetic joy will come in the near future.
