Psalm 94

Written on 07/18/2024

Verses 1-6

  • The Psalmist prays for God to take vengeance on the wicked for all the ways they oppress others. This shows trust in God's judgment.

    • Instead of trying to take vengeance on those who've wronged you, prayerfully trust judgment to God.

    • As Romans 12:19-20 says, “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, 'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,' says the Lord. Therefore, 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

Verses 7-11

  • God sees and hears everything, including every secret thing (Ecclesiastes 12:14). It is foolish to think there is any sin that He takes no notice of. This kind of thinking is futile—worthless because it is untrue.

    • Every time that we sin knowingly, we show in our actions that we don't think God takes any notice, or that He somehow disregards it. This is a lie. Remember that everything you do matters, and no sin is insignificant.

Verses 12-13

  • During times of adversity, knowledge and understanding of the Word will bring you comfort.

    • Without knowledge and understanding, there is chaos and confusion. Knowing the Word keeps you mentally prepared, makes sure nothing catches you by surprise, and gives answers to questions that would otherwise cause turmoil.

    • So lean on the Word and wait patiently for God's time for His judgment.

Verses 14-19

  • While we wait for God's judgment to come to this world, God helps us resist the enemy and endure. We cannot face the enemy by ourselves, so God empowers us with His grace and the comfort of His Spirit.

  • Verse 18. Even if you sin, simply continue in repentance (turning away from sin). You can know that God's mercy will keep you strong.

Verses 20-23

  • In the end, the sins of the wicked will be their downfall, and God will defend us believers.
