Verses 1-4
-
The tabernacle and courts of the Lord were places where certain people in the Old Testament could encounter God's presence or be close to God in moments. The sons of Korah note that even birds made nests in the tabernacle, and were blessed to dwell there. How much more will we find our greatest joy, rest, and satisfaction in closeness with God?
-
If we spend enough time getting closer to God, eventually our whole being will long for Him more and more. We'll develop so much joy that we'll always be praising Him.
-
-
Continue to seek God in the Word and prayer on a daily basis, and don't be discouraged by the present weaknesses of your flesh.
-
Eventually, you'll develop a hunger and thirst for Him that will even cause your mind and body (“heart and flesh”), though notoriously corrupted by sin, to want to submit themselves to God instead. Know that you were meant for your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—to desire and obey God. You can experience this in this life, so seek God faithfully, and know that your body will learn to love God too!

Verses 5-8
-
In a way of symbolism, the psalmist teaches us here that when we have our hearts set on the kingdom of heaven, focusing on the fact that this life is a “pilgrimage” (1 Peter 2:11), we will be able to “pass through” hardships with continuing strength and refreshment.
-
Again, your home is with God. This present, corrupt world is not your home, and the temporary things of this world are not meant to be your pursuit. You are simply traveling through this world in expectation of the homeland to come (Hebrews 11:13-16).
-
-
The present world has many valleys of weeping (“Baca” means weeping). But make it your goal to “appear before God” in His kingdom, having lived a life that was well-pleasing to Him (2 Corinthians 5:9), and you'll have joy!
-
Then, the dry parts of this world will be like a spring to you—you'll be able to have joy in times that would normally be discouraging. Focusing on the cares of this world will make this world's afflictions harder; but focusing on the reward of the kingdom will make this world's afflictions lighter (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Verses 9-12
-
For all the blessing that God gives, and the joy there is in His presence, one day as a believer is better than a thousand as a sinner. And one day spent walking in the Spirit—walking closely with God—is more rich and full than a thousand spent walking in the flesh. Remember this, and it will bring you joy and encouragement to press on when needed.
-
Even if we occupied the lowest place in God's kingdom, it would be better than prospering here on earth alongside sinners. Denying sin to live for the kingdom is well worth it! It's a no-brainer!
