Psalm 87

Verses 1-3

  • Glorious things are indeed spoken of Zion, meaning Jerusalem, all over the Bible. All of the major events in the history of our faith took place in Jerusalem, and there are more to come. This makes Jerusalem a type of foundation for God in His plan for the human race.

    • The city of God in heaven is also called Zion (Hebrews 12:22), and a New Jerusalem will come down to earth out of heaven one day in the future (Revelation 21:2).

    • More specifically, the heavenly Zion is the city of God; and God's plan will bring glory to His heavenly kingdom, not to the earthly city of Jerusalem.

Verses 4-6

  • Because of what Christ has done, people from all over the world can be registered in heaven (Hebrews 12:22-23) and counted among God's people. We are seen as “born there” because we have been “born again” (John 3:3).

Verse 7

  • Now that we are part of the kingdom of heaven, we know that all our springs—all life and blessing and grace—are found in the kingdom.

    • Being part of the kingdom and having all blessing in the kingdom should make us rejoice with singing and instruments. If we know the favor that we have, we will want to rejoice!

    • Do choose to rejoice about your citizenship in the kingdom and the favor you have from God as a believer. Think about this often, and it will bring joy!
