Proverbs 31

Verses 3-7

  • Verses 3-5. As followers of Christ, we are meant to be strong. Sexual sin and drunkenness take away strength and clear thinking. Avoid sin, as it will rob your ability to think and live well.

  • Verses 6-7. Sin is unbecoming of believers; it's not who you are to live in sin (Ephesians 5:3-4).

    • Remember that unbelievers and sinners are those who love to drink. They use alcohol to forget the misery of their sins.

    • But, as a believer, you shouldn't be living in sin, and its misery, so drinking is obviously not for you. Don't be drunk; in doing so you're saying that you're just like every other sinner in the world, when you're not.

Verses 10-31

  • Verses 10-12. It's hard to find a godly spouse, so finding one is God's grace to you (Proverbs 18:22, 19:14). Pray for a godly spouse!

    • A godly spouse will do more for you than any amount of monetary wealth! For practical goals in your life, pursue godly relationships and a godly spouse, first

      • Verses 11-12. You won't have to be concerned about loss in your household if you have a spouse that you can trust and who will always support you.

  • If you are a wife yourself, live this way:

    • Verses 13-15, 27. Rise early and work diligently to take care of your home. Don't be idle or lazy, and don't waste time.

    • Verses 16, 18. Be knowledgable about finances, and find ways to make more money from what you and your husband have.

    • Verse 17. Keep yourself physically healthy and fit.

    • Verse 19, 24. Develop skills and talents useful for your family, that can be monetized for additional income.

    • Verse 20. Be compassionate to the poor, and be generous.

    • Verse 21-22. Have your family dressed in quality clothing.

      • Help to keep yourself and your family trained and prepared for harsh conditions in the world.

    • Verse 23. Speak highly of your husband so that others will respect him.

    • Verse 25. Learn to be strong and honorable in your mind/emotions, and then you will be happy and unafraid for the future.

    • Verse 26. Learn knowledge and wisdom from God's Word, and always speak with wisdom and gentleness.

  • Verses 28-31. Physical beauty fades away, and praise for that beauty will fade also. But if you cultivate great character, wisdom, skills, and godliness, you will always be praised, respected, and favored by your children, your husband, and all those around you.
