Verses 1-3, 20-21
-
Gluttony will bring harm and dishonor to you. It makes others look on you poorly. Do not overeat.
Verses 4-5
-
Don't work for the purpose of getting rich. This is dangerous. Wealth can be taken away quickly.
-
Work for the purpose of honoring God and gaining influence and abundance for God's kingdom.
-
Verses 6-8
-
If you're eating with a person who you know is stingy with their money, even if they're trying to be generous, pay for at least your own food.
-
These kinds of people are much more likely to perceive exploitation of their generosity in your actions, if you aren't extra careful.
-
Verse 9
-
Don't share wisdom with someone that you know won't listen to it. It will be wasted words that will only cause them to resent you.
Verses 13-14
-
Understand that physical discipline for children, although it stings, helps to get them saved. Do spank your children, and do it while they're young!
-
Even young children have evil in their hearts (Genesis 8:21).
-
It will be harder to bring a child to repentance and salvation if you do not spank them. Undisciplined children are more easily seduced by evil.
-
Verse 17
- Sinners have pleasure in sin that's temporary. We have a greater pleasure in Christ that will last forever! Who has it better? Believers do! Remember this if you ever feel some envy towards sinners.
Verse 23
-
It is a worthwhile use of your money to use it to acquire things that will make you wiser, more knowledgeable, and more godly in your actions.
-
It is a good idea to spend money, if you must, to learn things that help you live effectively.
-
For some, this is coaching, school, business training, or even Bible training.
-
-
The point is, wisdom in any form is priceless. Even if you will spend money on gaining wisdom, it is well worth it.
-
Do not devalue things that bring you good education.
-
Verses 27-28
-
Do not be tricked. You cannot be a faithful follower of Christ while in sexual sin. Repent of sexual sin quickly!
Verses 29-35
-
Great sorrow and pain will come from attachment to alcohol. Avoid any form of drunkenness or mind altering substances at all costs (Ephesians 5:18, 1 Corinthians 6:10)!
-
Verse 31. To avoid sin and temptation, do not even look upon things that will seduce you. If you are not careful with your eyes, it will be easier to sin.
