Verse 1

  • If you want to prevent conflict in a situation, make sure that you speak softly. Soft speech will make others speak more softly

    • And certainly do not gossip or speak ill of someone you want to make peace with. This will only bring more anger (Proverbs 25:23).

Verses 2, 4, 7, 23

  • Verses 2, 7. Wisdom is about applying your knowledge to your own life-experiences and using your knowledge to help others.

  • When you have knowledge about something, it's important to use it wisely. In other words, know when to share your knowledge and when not to.

    • A wise use of knowledge means limiting your words. How so?

      • Share what the person you're speaking to will be able to retain. Speak concisely.

      • Share what is needful or helpful for the person you're speaking to. Don't add words that will distract from what the person needs.

  • Verses 4, 23. If you use your words wisely and in the right timing, it will help many people, and this will bring you joy!

Verse 13,15

  • People who are suffering often have a hard time seeing the good in life. But if you have joy in your heart, no matter what you're going through you will always find some enjoyment.

    • Focus on the amazing gift it is to have eternal life, and this will keep your joy (1 Peter 1:5-9).

Verses 16-17

  • Focus most on cultivating love and peace in your home and relationships. This will do far more for yourself and your people than an abundance of worldly luxuries (Proverbs 17:1).

    • Providing finances for your family, for example, is not that valuable if you do not provide loving care and an example of a God-fearing life.

Verse 19

  • If you are lazy your life will be full of setbacks. Be focused and hard-working, and then you will progress smoothly and speedily. How so?

    • Diligent people plan and work well. They avoid most setbacks because they put in the work to prevent them. Plus, they won't be discouraged by challenges because they're willing to work to overcome them.

Verse 21

  • You are not wise if you find foolish things enjoyable or funny. Be careful to not laugh about things that are foolish.

Verse 26

  • Remember that God sees our thoughts as well as our actions. Our thoughts will be either pleasing or displeasing to God at any point.

    • Be careful to keep your thoughts pure, not just your actions.

Verse 28

  • Think carefully before speaking! And remember that studying the Word to gain its wisdom will improve your ability to respond well to situations in your life.
