Job 20

Verses 1-4

  • Zophar speaks because he was provoked by emotion. And what he says, as with Job's other friends, is based upon his own and common experience (verse 4). His understanding of how the world works seems to come from this experience.

    • When a situation upsets you, reacting emotionally and speaking without wisdom founded in Scripture will only make things worse. Avoid this.

Verses 6-29

  • Then Zophar speaks about the fate of the wicked, as the others did in previous chapters. Again, what Zophar says here is generally true. But Job explains in the next chapter that there are exceptions...sinners sometimes prosper more than we would expect.

    • Zophar begins by saying that the wicked are full of pride but will ultimately perish (verses 6-9).

    • Then that the wicked will eventually no longer find enjoyment in the pleasures they previously indulged in, but will still indulge until there is nothing left (verses 12-22).

    • In the end, the wrath of God will consume them in death (verses 23-29).

  • Although Zophar uses his teaching here to underhandedly indict Job, we can draw some applicable insight from his words:

    • The more you indulge in pleasure, the less it will satisfy, and you will need more and more in order to quench your lust. Focus on being content and thankful for what God has given you, and this will bring you more joy!
