Verses 1-4
-
Before making a longer discourse, Job replies to Bildad, and likely his other two friends, saying, “You haven't helped me! Have you truly helped anyone?” In verse 4 Job says, essentially, “What spirit has influenced you to speak such words?!”
-
Let's be reminded that spirits/demons, although they cannot indwell believers, can influence thoughts and words that we or others speak. Eliphaz himself actually spoke being influenced by a spirit (Job 4:12-16). Be careful about your words. Even when you feel divinely inspired you could be deceived.
-
-
The words of Job's friends were so unsettling to Job that he questioned whether they had helped anyone at all in their lives. There seems to be some anger in these words.
-
Do not become bitter towards those who tried and failed to give you good advice. Everyone speaks at their own level of understanding, and since everyone's understanding is incomplete, we must have grace for what they do not know.
-
Verses 5-14
-
Now Job describes God's power in creation, and even how He created different parts of the earth.
-
Verse 7. It can be confirmed in this verse that the earth is freely floating in space. This is a fact that even science, though flawed, has confirmed.
-
-
Job finishes with the statement that all these great works of God in creation are “the mere edges of His ways” and that what we hear of God and know about Him today is only a “small whisper” (verse 14a).
-
Ironically, it's hard to understand even the “mere edges” that Job describes in his words about creation here! Certainly, then, we cannot understand the fullness of God's power (verse 14b).
-
-
Job's friends had spoken confidently about their theology. Job may be here reminding them that they do not understand as much as they think they do. We would be wise hear the same. Do not be arrogant about your understanding.
