Job 25

Verses 1-6

  • These are Job's friend's final words in the book of Job. After they have spent much time trying to prove to Job his guilt, Bildad finishes with what seems to be a desperate last word.

    • Bildad cries that it's not possible for a man to be righteous! The light of the moon and stars—even possibly the light of the angels—is glorious, but it is not perfect in God's eyes. God far exceeds the purity of such things.

    • Whereas man is made of dirt, and so compared to worms of the dirt (also see Isaiah 41:14, Psalm 22:6). How could we ever have hope to be pure if we are made of such a low substance?

  • Bildad misses the point. The fact that our bodies are made of dirt does not make it impossible for us to be righteous. It simply means that we cannot possibly be righteous or pure in our own strength.

    • Righteousness is a work of God, and to be pure is a miracle of His power, only to be completed at the return of Christ (Philippians 3:21).

    • Let this knowledge humble you. Whenever you feel proud or satisfied in any good work you're doing, remember that your ability is as that of a worm. Only by God's grace and power can you do accomplish anything.
