Verses 1-32
-
Everything that happened to Jesus was to fulfill the prophetic Scriptures. Jesus silently endured it because He was fully submitted to the will of God.
-
In the same way, what happens to us is in the will of God.
-
Like Jesus, trust, pray, and do not complain or revile.

Verses 33-37
-
Jesus was forsaken by God—God turned away from Him—because He became sin.
-
This was so that we could become righteous and remain close with God forever. Be thankful for Jesus' suffering for you!
-
Verses 38-41
-
Verse 38. The tearing of the veil to the holy place in the temple meant that, because of Jesus' death, there would no longer have to be any separation between God and man.
-
God's presence/Spirit has come to dwell within us forever. Jesus' death means the restoration of relationship with God. Focus on this relationship and be thankful for the death of Christ!
-
-
Verse 39. The way that Jesus died caused a person to believe.
-
Giving up one's life brings people to belief in Christ.
-
Be like Jesus, and be willing to give up what you prefer in order to help someone else. This is a show of love that leads others to Christ.
-
Verses 42-47
-
Joseph, as a council member, was afraid when Jesus was accused before the Sanhedrin. He was there when Jesus was being condemned, and he said nothing.
-
But later, he encouraged himself to take Jesus' body to burial.
-
Even though he missed his chance to defend Jesus when He was alive, he repented by taking a chance to honor Jesus in His burial. He did what he could by providing a tomb.
-
He still had some fear (John 19:38), but it took courage for him to go and ask for Jesus' body.
-
-
Like Joseph, even if you have fear of man, take some action. This will help you overcome fear. Even if your action to face your fear is small, it's valuable to God!
