Verses 1-12
-
The apostles, Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy set for us a great example in what it means for a leader to help others follow Christ.
-
Verse 2. They were bold to preach the gospel to them even during persecution.
-
Verses 3-5. They spoke the truth with pure motives and didn't flatter them for any selfish gain.
-
Verse 6. They didn't seek any glory or fame from them.
-
Verses 7,11-12. They cared for them as their own children.
-
Verse 8. They gave their time, resources, and energy to provide for the church. They didn't merely speak to them.
-
Verse 9. They worked hard to provide for their own needs, expecting nothing from the church in return for their ministry.
-
Verse 10. They were a great example, and sinned against no one.
-
-
To sum it up, serve believers like this: No matter the backlash, boldly speak the truth, be selfless, seek no fame or fortune, give what you have like you would give to your own kids, and expect nothing in return. Live so that no one can accuse you of any sin.
Verse 13
-
Scripture does not come from man. It comes from God. Believe this, and it will work effectively in you.
-
If you think that the Word is altered by man, you will never be able to have confidence in it, and it won't produce anything meaningful in your life. Trust the Word!
-
Verses 14-16
-
The Judean church—the community of believers we read about in Acts 1-12—suffered great persecution from the Jewish people.
-
And Paul commends the Thessalonians for imitating this church in Judea, particularly for their endurance through suffering. We will also do well to imitate the Judean church.
-
Understand that the book of Acts was written to show believers how to act. Learn from the example set by the early church, in Acts, for how to operate as an effective and unified community.
-
Verses 17-20
-
Paul always preferred to see the church in person, even intensely desiring it (1 Thessalonians 3:6,10).
-
Wherever possible, when you want/need to speak to other believers, see them in person.
-
Don't rely on phone calls, texting, or emails. Being in person shows greater love.
-
-
-
Remember that, when Christ returns, we will rejoice in our fellow believers (2 Corinthians 1:14, Philippians 4:1). The people that we serve will be a great reward in the kingdom. Love them well today, and in eternity you will have great joy.
-
See note on Philippians 4:1 for more details.
