Actions to Grow Joy / Overcome Depression

Written on 11/01/2024

  1. Focus on your salvation, on Christ, and give God thanks for saving you from condemnation (1 Peter 1:3-9, John 16:22, Psalm 35:9, Philippians 4:4).

  2. Focus on how you will grow in your character/Christ-likeness through your hardships (James 1:2, Romans 5:3-4). If you want growth, knowing that hardship brings growth, then you have a reason to be joyful during hardship!

  3. Be with other believers and help each other get closer to God. This will bring you joy (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20).

  4. Work to bring more people to salvation / obedience to God. Their salvation will bring you joy (Luke 15:1-10, Acts 15:3, 3 John 1:4).

  5. Focus on being diligent in your work, and put more time into productive activities. Then, you will have joy “in the fruit of your labor” (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13). If you're not a good worker, or are lazy, your recreation won't be fulfilling. A laboring person has much sweeter rest and recreation (Ecclesiastes 5:12).

  6. Grow in your obedience to the Word, and you will have more joy (Psalm 119:2 NLT, John 15:9-11).

  7. Learn to fend off anxiety, as this causes depression (Proverbs 12:25) (refer to teaching on overcoming anxiety with peace).
