Acts 15

Verses 1-6

  • Verses 2,6. When there are disagreements in a church on what should be taught to believers, it's important for the leaders to meet and come to agreement, so that the same thing is taught by all the leaders.

    • There should be multiple pastors in a church. This brings greater wisdom (Proverbs 11:14).

  • Verses 3-4. It brings great joy to believers when there are lots of people being saved.

    • Prioritize evangelism in your life and community, and there will be greater joy.

Verses 7-21

  • Verses 8-11. God has received all believers and given them His Spirit because of their faith.

    • When you try to add extra conditions to being saved, beyond simple repentance and faith, you only hurt people (verse 19).

      • People will not come to believe that they are saved by God's grace if we teach that they must do extra works in order to be saved. Keep the gospel simple. Don't add commands that are not in the Bible.

  • Verse 18. This verse supports the doctrine of God's omniscience. Remember that God has had all of His actions planned from the beginning of creation

    • And if He has planned out everything ahead of time, we can know that what He has put in His Word is enough for believers

      • So, again, do not add requirements to being a Christian that are not in the Bible. This is like saying that God somehow missed something or that what He has planned isn't enough.

Verses 22-29

  • Verses 24,28-29. You do not need to keep the law of Moses to be a follower of Jesus (you can use this Scripture if you encounter people who say otherwise).

  • But it is necessary for a follower of Jesus to avoid sin. Freedom from the law of Moses is not permission to sin freely.

    • Especially avoid participating in any activity that you know is dedicated to a false religion or sinful cause, and avoid sexual sin

      • Sexual sin is especially destructive to oneself (1 Corinthians 6:18).

  • There is an application here to dietary restrictions drawn from “things polluted by idols, blood, things strangled.” See 1 Corinthians 8, 1 Corinthians 10, and Romans 14 for clarification on this.

Verses 30-35

  • Verse 31. It is encouraging to believers when teaching is simple and instruction is clear. Confusion makes things hard.

    • If you notice that a fellow believer is unclear on an important topic, help them gain clear understanding, if you can.

  • Verse 32. Remember that prophecy is also effective for strengthening and encouraging believers (1 Corinthians 14:3). Value prophecy and desire it (1 Corinthians 14:1).

    • Don't expect to experience prophecy if you don't value it.

Verses 36-41

  • Likely out of fear or weakness, Mark had deserted Paul and Barnabas the first time he traveled with them (Acts 13:13). Paul's point was that he did not want to bring along an unreliable person. Barnabas' point was that they should give him a second chance.

    • Later on, Mark ended up becoming valuable to Paul (2 Timothy 4:11).

    • The point? Do not give up on a person just because they fail once. Because Barnabas was merciful to Mark, Mark had another chance to grow, and he became a great man.

      • It is not wrong to prefer partnerships with stronger believers, but always give others the chance to learn and grow through their weaknesses. You will help them do this if you stay with them faithfully. Be patient with people's weaknesses (Romans 15:1).
