Verses 1-4
-
Jesus was not moved to action just because people wanted Him to act. He was led by the Father in everything, including when to work miracles. If He didn't get permission from the Father, He did not act. He was patient for the timing to begin using His faith and power.
-
Don't think that you are obligated to do something just because people demand it. Be led by the Word and the Spirit, not pressure from people. Like Jesus, be patient for the right timing in everything you do and say.
-
If you follow the Word, you will love and care for people better anyway.
-
-
Verse 5
-
Like Mary said here, whatever God says, let's do it! Be a doer of the Word! Don't make excuses.
Verses 6-12
-
Jesus not only turned water into wine, but He turned it into the best wine!
-
God doesn't do mediocrity. What He does, He does perfectly.
-
In your life, remember to give your best in everything. Don't do things half-heartedly.
-
-
As a side note, consider that God can create aged wine instantly.
-
Keep in mind that the assumed age of creation says nothing about how old it actually is. God can create signs of age and maturity in an instant.
-
Verses 13-17
-
Jesus planned and calculated what He would do in the temple, even to taking the time to fashioning a whip.
-
Jesus did not act out of impulsive emotion. His anger was controlled and used as a tool for specific purposes.
-
Do not act out of impulse. Learn to use controlled emotion to enhance certain actions and make them more effective.
-
-
Notice that Jesus' zeal for the house of the Lord caused Him to be so bold and aggressive even.
-
When passion for God consumes you, you will not be afraid of how people will react to your obedience to God.
-
Before action, don't just think about what is loving to people; think first about what is most loving to God. Remember to serve God first.
-
If doing what is right for God will cause people to be displeased, it is still right.
-
-
Verses 18-22
-
Not everything that Jesus said was understood or believed in the same moment. Jesus' own disciples could not make sense of Jesus' statement here until after He rose from the dead.
-
Some people need to hear things that they won't understand until later (Luke 18:34). When you speak to people, be as clear as you can be, but be patient with people's understanding.
-
Verses 23-25
-
Even though Jesus saw that many people believed in Him, He did not draw validation from nor attach His sense of personal security to what people thought of Him. Besides, many of these same people walked away from Him at a later date (John 6:66).
-
Jesus knew that people are fallible and tend to be fickle, and so He would not rest His confidence on man.
-
Like Jesus, don't put your confidence in people, thinking that they will always be faithful to you. But love all people anyway, as Jesus did, and don't grow bitter against anyone.
-
Also, don't think you're doing well just because people approve of you. Be concerned with what God thinks of your actions (1 Corinthians 4:4).
