Verses 1-9

  • Assyria dealt treacherously with Israel, and God reassures Israel that Assyria would be punished.

  • God tells that wisdom, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord would bring them stability. This couldn't be more true.

    • With wisdom and knowledge, we know how to deal with problems, and this brings confidence and security.

    • When we fear God and His judgment, we will not fear man. For the power that a deep fear of God brings, it is truly a treasure that God gives to us.

      • Seek wisdom and knowledge from the Word and learn about the things that brings the fear of God and this will benefit you greatly.

Verses 10-16

  • God now shows Israel that there are hypocrites among their own people that must also be punished, and that they will be seized with fear.

  • God's judgment is like a vehement flame. Even God Himself is called a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). If we try to dwell with God in a sinful state, His presence will destroy us. So, in order to dwell with God, holiness is essential (Hebrews 12:14).

    • Not only live with honesty and integrity in your own actions, but do not even come close to evil or sin. Don't listen to look upon anything sinful.

      • What you see and hear matters. For example, don't watch filthy movies or listen to filthy music. And don't entertain or stay in vulgar or foolish conversations

      • But you will walk closely with God if you live separate from sin.

Verses 17-24

  • As this relates to us, in choosing obedience to God, we will be in the kingdom of heaven, and we will see Christ face to face. We will dwell with Him in eternal life and peace, with no more sin and no more sickness.
