Verses 1-16

Isaiah speaks of the destruction of Tyre and Sidon, two island cities famed for their bustling trade and commerce in the ancient world.

Verse 9. Their destruction came, in large, to humble them—“to bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.”

The way that pride is leveled is through humiliation (Proverbs 16:18), and the greater the pride, the greater the humiliation must be.

Do not give in to pride; accept humiliations joyfully and learn from them(James 1:10).

Verses 17-18

This passage is an example of how “the wealth of the wicked is laid up for the just” (Proverbs 13:22). The righteous are always those who are blessed in the end.

The proceeds of a sinful life will not benefit you in the end. Sin makes your life a waste. But if you are righteous—if you follow Jesus—you will gain an eternal value in the end, receiving an inheritance in God's kingdom.
