Isaiah 4

Verse 1

  • As a result of God's judgment described in Isaiah 3, women in Israel would become desperate for a husband, multiple women asking to marry the same man, as to avoid shame.

    • In short, it's not good for women to overly desperate for a man because it can cause them to marry too quickly and for the wrong reasons. It's also not good for women to think that their husbands don't need to provide for them, and that they should provide for themselves.

      • As in the previous chapter, it's considered a curse for women to live/think like this. Wives, marry wisely, and do expect your husband to work and provide for you.

Verses 2-6

  • Verse 2. The day is coming, after the last fall of global society (a “falling away” [2 Thessalonians 2:3]) when Jesus Christ—the Branch of the Lord—will be revealed, as He returns from heaven (Luke 17:30, 2 Thessalonians 1:7).

    • Isaiah 3-4 seems to describe not only the conditions of Israel during the time of the kings, but also what the conditions of the world will be like before and during the time of end, before Christ returns.

  • Verse 3. Those who are spared from God's wrath will be believers, and they “will be called holy”.

    • Our names are recorded in the book of life (Revelation 21:27, Philippians 4:3).

  • Verse 4. Also, when Christ returns, there will be a purging fire to cleanse the earth.

    • This fire will also cleanse believers (Mark 9:49). See teaching on Mark 9 for details.

  • Verses 5-6. During the time of Christ's physical presence on earth, there will be manifest presence of God similar to God's presence among the Israelites in Exodus (Exodus 13).

  • Look forward to these things, and do your part by living obediently (2 Peter 3:14).
