Isaiah 42

Verses 1-12

  • Here God prophesies, through Isaiah, that He will do a new thing to reveal His glory (verse 9). He will send a Servant, anointed with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38), to bring justice, to bring a law, to be a covenant, and a light to the world. This speaks of none other than Jesus Christ. Praise God for doing this new thing!

    • Verse 4a. Indeed, Jesus did not fail nor become discouraged in His works. He was strong and obedient to the end (verse 4)

    • Verses 2-3. He did many of His works discreetly, spreading the gospel by the power of the Spirit, and not by loud or forceful campaigns (see Matthew 12:14-21). He was also gentle. Rather than “breaking” or “quenching” those who were weak, He helped and healed them!

    • Verse 1b. He revealed true justice by His preaching, exposing sin, hypocrisy, and God's righteous judgment. He accomplished justice, in part, by taking the penalty for our sins in His own death.

    • Verse 4b. His life brought us the New Testament, “the perfect law of liberty” (James 1:25)—truth that sets us free from sin and death if we follow it (Romans 8:2, John 8:31-32).

    • Verse 6a. Jesus is “the mediator of the new covenant” that we now have with God (Hebrews 12:24), meaning that by His death and resurrection we have God's grace, forgiveness, and a relationship with Him.

    • Verses 6b-7. Jesus came to bring the light of the gospel and salvation to Gentiles—all nations of the world. This gospel opens eyes blinded by sin and deception and frees people from the control of the devil (Acts 26:18).

  • To be a servant of God who's like Jesus, the Servant, spread the word of God with gentleness, and help people follow the teachings of the New Testament. Expose right and wrong to others. Be someone who “mediates” by bringing others to God!

Verses 13-20

  • At the second coming of Christ, His work will not be discreet. There will indeed be shouting and great force this time (1 Thessalonians 4:16). God has been patiently waiting to bring His judgment on the earth, and the appointed time is coming. Everyone on earth who blindly worships false gods, including the Israelites, will be ashamed because all will know certainly that Jesus Christ is Lord, and many will repent.

Verses 21-25

  • When people suffer judgment for their sins, as Israel did in this context, they often do not realize that it is God who brings this judgment, and to God they ought to repent. Many people do not listen and do not take it to heart. Instead, they

  • Remember that God is bringing correction when you suffer for your sins (1 Corinthians 11:29-32). Be someone who gives ear (verse 23). Listen to God's law, which He is exalting, and repent!
