Isaiah 23

Verses 1-16

  • Isaiah speaks of the destruction of Tyre and Sidon, two island cities famed for their bustling trade and commerce in the ancient world.

    • Verse 9. Their destruction came, in large, to humble them—“to bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.”

    • The way that pride is leveled is through humiliation (Proverbs 16:18), and the greater the pride, the greater the humiliation must be.

      • Do not give in to pride; accept humiliations joyfully and learn from them(James 1:10).

Verses 17-18

  • This passage is an example of how “the wealth of the wicked is laid up for the just” (Proverbs 13:22). The righteous are always those who are blessed in the end.

    • The proceeds of a sinful life will not benefit you in the end. Sin makes your life a waste. But if you are righteous—if you follow Jesus—you will gain an eternal value in the end, receiving an inheritance in God's kingdom.
