Verses 1-15
-
All people thirst for satisfaction in life. Without Christ, we go to the pleasures of the world, but none of these ever satisfy. But, through a relationship with Christ we receive eternal life and true satisfaction
-
If you lack satisfaction in your life, the answer is to get closer to Jesus. Continue to drink of His water. Grow daily in the Word, in prayer, in obedience.
-
Remember that you need His Word like you need water. As much as we need water, we need Jesus.

Verses 16-19
-
The Spirit can reveal information about people, even their sin, that helps to convict and persuade them
-
This woman came to know, at this point at least, that Jesus was sent from God.
-
-
If you hear or discern information from the Spirit about a person's life, use it wisely.
Verses 20-24
-
God is not honored with physical places, since He does not dwell in temples made with hands. God now dwells in us through the Holy Spirit that lives within us. So, God is honored and worshiped when we obey His Word in honesty (truth) and through the power of the Holy Spirit in us (Philippians 3:3).
-
The Holy Spirit in us, moving us to live according to the Word, is the definition of worshiping “in spirit and in truth.”
-
-
The believer's actions and lifestyle worship God (Romans 12:1), not physical buildings or temples.
-
Don't focus on buildings or infrastructure. Focus honoring God with the temple of your body—using your body to obey the Word and the Spirit.
-
Verses 25-30, 39-42
-
This woman, coming to realize that Jesus was the Christ, and went proclaimed it to her city, also sharing what she had experienced with Jesus. Many believed because of her testimony.
-
Later, the Samaritans came to Jesus themselves and listened to Him, at which point many more came to their own belief in Jesus.
-
When you share the gospel, remember that some people are ready to believe as soon as they hear you, and others will be intrigued by your words to go and learn more for themselves, at which point they also will believe.
-
Your testimony—the excitement that you have about what you've experienced with Christ—creates a powerful draw for people. Never underestimate the power of simply sharing your experiences.
-
-
Verses 31-38
-
When a person is focused on doing God's work, as Jesus was, they gain energy from the work itself.
-
Although we have the natural need to eat well and drink water, know that God will give you more strength the more you do for the kingdom.
-
-
God's work is gathering people into the kingdom like one gathers wheat for a harvest, and there are always plenty of people that are able to be saved.
-
Fruit for eternal life and the harvest of souls means people being saved, and getting people saved requires both sowing and reaping.
-
Some people introduce the Word to people, to first plant the seed, others water that seed and encourage belief, and others see people finally choose to follow Christ, which would be reaping a salvation. Every step in the process is necessary. (1 Corinthians 3:5-9).
-
You might see someone come to Christ, but you did not see all the labor that went into getting that person ready to come to Christ (verse 38).
-
-
Make your life all about gathering people into the kingdom of God, and labor how you can by sharing the Word with others and living a Christ-like example for others to see.
-
Verses 43-44
-
See teaching on Mark 6 and Luke 4 for commentary.
Verses 45-54
-
Verse 47-50 . When this man came to Jesus asking for a healing for his son, Jesus seems to reply harshly, seemingly rebuking him for needing to see a miracle in order to believe.
-
At first, the man expected Jesus to travel back to his house with him, but Jesus only spoke a word. The man made the right choice to believe that word. He let go of his expectation, and this showed that he was not demanding that Jesus to do anything specific in order for him to believe.
-
-
Verse 53. By the end, after he found that his son was healed, he and his whole household believed in Jesus as their Messiah.
-
Pray to God for help in any situation, and out of compassion, God will help you. But let go of expectations you might have, and accept any help that God's gives you. Demand nothing more. You will see results, and your faith will be strengthened.
