Psalm 68

Written on 05/09/2024

Verses 1-3

  • Those who hate God will end up terrified of Him on the day of judgment, but we who are believers will have joy in His salvation.

Verses 4-6

  • For all the good that God does, sing to Him!

    • Songs can make it easier to be cheerful and thankful to God in your heart, which will make your thoughts and your speech pleasant to Him. So, do sing; it will help you!

Verses 7-13

  • As God provided through His presence for the Israelites in the wilderness, He has provided His goodness for us through Christ. We now enjoy the spoils of the war that Christ fought against sin and death.

Verses 14-19

  • Though there are many great mountains, God chose lowly Zion to be the place of Jerusalem—the place of His presence among the Israelites.

  • Though we are lowly, and began as rebellious, God has chosen us—His church—to be the people among whom His presence dwells.

    • And through Christ's victory, we have received the Holy Spirit and gifts of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:7-12). We give Him our lives to Him (we are “His inheritance” [Ephesians 1:18]), and He gives gifts to us.

    • In fact, He “daily loads us with benefits”. Remember this! We've been given far more than we can even imagine, and He continues to give daily. Praise God for this!

Verses 20-23

  • In Christ we have salvation and escape from death, and we also have power over the works of the enemy (Luke 10:19). We can resist the devil now, his head having been crushed in blood (Genesis 3:15) through Jesus' death and resurrection.

Verses 24-32

  • We read about a musical procession that takes place in what appears to be Jerusalem, under king David. Kings and nations also bring tribute to God.

  • At first, tribes of Israel come praising God, but at the end of the passage, Egypt and Ethiopia are also participating.

    • This is a reminder that all nations that submit to God one day. Hope for this, and lead the way, like the little tribe of Benjamin, by praising and glorifying God in your actions today. As believers, our efforts might seem little, but they're not! Nations are affected by our service to God.

Verses 33-35

  • God's strength and power are not in the holy places that men have built for Him, but His might is in His voice, and His power in the heavenly realm—the power of the kingdom. And it is this power that He gives to us—His church (Ephesians 1:19, 3:20).

  • To ascribe strength to God is to give Him recognition and praise for the strength that He has on His own.

    • Remind yourself of God's power, and know that His voice, though still and small, has great power. Let this remind you to listen to and obey the Holy Spirit! If you feel conviction to take an action, obey!
