Verses 1-3
-
God speaks to us through Christ. Remember to especially listen to the words of Christ! Focus on Jesus above everything else!
-
Christ is God and Creator (see verses 8 and 10) (Colossians 1:16-17).
-
Christ alone has washed away our sins with His own blood. He did this "by Himself", acting alone, without any human support, even forsaken by His followers. Be like Jesus - love others even if you do so by yourself, without any recognition or support.
-
Christ has all authority.
Verses 4-13
-
Jesus is not an angel, and He is greater than any angel. ALL the angels worship Him! If even the greatest of the angels worship Him, then He Himself cannot be an angel.
-
All of the Old Testament supports that Jesus is greater than all the angelic host, and that He is God. Use these verses to support the doctrine that Jesus is God, and especially to those who would try to claim that Jesus is merely an angel.
-
Verse 8. To the Son, Jesus, it is said that He is God, and that His throne is forever and ever. And yet, the Father is the God of the Son at the same time (verse 9). Christ is God, and yet He is submitted to the Father.
-
Verse 10-12. Still speaking about the Son, Jesus, it is said that He is also called Yahweh, the Creator of all things, and that He will never change nor pass away.
-
Verses 7,14
-
Angels are helpers. They serve God and obey His commands (Psalm 103:20) for the support and benefit of believers and those who may become believers.
-
Remember that angels are always present and doing what is helpful, but keep your focus on the Son! Don't give too much attention to angels (Colossians 2:18).
