Your Diet and Your Health (Study Outline)

1. We are commanded to honor our bodies as temples of God's Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:20, 1 Thessalonians 4:4). To dishonor one's body is sinful (Romans 1:24).

  • You dishonor your body by indulging the flesh (gluttony, laziness, sexual immorality, etc.) (1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 4:5).

  • You honor your body by being disciplined and denying your flesh what it wants (1 Corinthians 9:27).

    • Honoring your body does not mean doing what your current body wants, because your current body is “dead because of sin” (Romans 8:10). Fulfilling the desires of the body is evil (Ephesians 2:3).

2. When we choose sin, we will bring corruption (more sickness, weakness, pain, etc.) to our bodies (Galatians 6:8). Choosing an unhealthy diet is choosing sin.

  • A dishonorable diet (gluttony), in particular, is the only thing that the Bible specifically says will cause you to “bring judgment on yourself” (1 Corinthians 11:27-30).

    • God has made it so that your diet drives your healthIf you make unhealthy choices for your diet, and your health is compromised because of those choices, you are suffering judgment (natural consequences) that you brought on yourself(Romans 6:23, Genesis 2:17).

      • In many cases, you can restore your health with changes to your habits.

      • In other cases, your health seems not to improve no matter what you do.

        • Do what you can to be healthy, but ultimately, focus on taking joy in Christ and your salvation, and you will have contentment. You can pray for a miracle, but know that a miracle isn't promised.

  • When we eat, we are meant to eat in a way that's worthy of the kingdom and in remembrance of Christ. Ask yourself, “Is my diet worthy of the kingdom? Does it honor Christ?” (see 1 Corinthians 10:31, 11:27-30).
