After salvation, the process of spiritual growth in Christ begins. In order to grow and mature, the mind must be renewed. Humans are three-part beings, comprised of the spirit, the mind, and the body 1 Thessalonians 5:23.
When a person gets saved, they are spiritually reborn and become “a new creation” 1 Peter 1:23-24, 2 Corinthians 5:16-17, Galatians 6:15. What is the new creation? Upon salvation, the Holy Spirit unites with your spirit, so that you become one-spirit with Christ 1 Corinthians 6:17, Ephesians 5:30-32. This makes you a new creation in spirit Ezekiel 36:26-27. This new creation is also called the “new man” Colossians 3:10.
Who you are and what you can accomplish, with the Holy Spirit and its power within you, makes up the new man. You can be “strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man” Ephesians 3:16.
In your spirit-man, you are perfect, righteous, holy, and Christ-like Ephesians 4:24, Colossians 3:10b, Colossians 1:27.
Jesus perfectly lived out the potential of the new man; He was a Man empowered by the same Spirit we have. In one sense, He is the epitome of what the new man is meant to be.
After salvation, your body and mind stay the same and retain their weaknesses Matthew 26:41, even though your spirit-man is perfect. But just as your spirit is “renewed day by day” 2 Corinthians 4:16, you can renew your mind daily Romans 12:2.
By renewing your mind you can be strengthened, so that you do not succumb to the weaknesses or temptations of the flesh. Focusing on reading and applying the word is how you renew your mind.
We must “put on the new man”. To renew your mind with knowledge of the Word, and to obey it, is how you put on the new man or live in “newness of life” Romans 6:4 Colossians 3:9-10, Ephesians 4:22-24.
