Verses 1-4
-
Pray and give thanks to God for all kinds of people, because God desires all people to be saved.
-
We should also pray that we would have leaders that would allow us to continue in our faith peacefully.
-
To support this, we should live peacefully towards governing authorities and not be repulsive to them.
-
-
Overall, pray for all people to be saved, pray for governments to treat you peacefully, and live peacefully towards them.
Verses 5-7
-
Jesus is the only way to God (John 14:6), because He is the only one who paid the penalty for our sins with His own life.
-
And He came at the perfect time (Galatians 4:4), to begin the final age of human history (Hebrews 9:26).
-
The clock is ticking, as we are in the last days (Acts 2:17). Be diligent to do what is important for bringing others to salvation (Ephesians 5:15, Colossians 4:5).
-
-
In addition to praying for people to be saved, preach the message of Christ. Prayer and preaching are powerful! Don't neglect these two works!
Verse 8
-
When you pray, pray in faith, and pray with love in your heart. Don't pray out of negative emotion towards anyone, and don't doubt the power of prayer (James 1:6-8).
-
Praying with the wrong attitude is fruitless.
-
Verses 9-10
-
If you're a woman, dress modestly. What does this mean?
-
Propriety: Dress in a way that's appropriate for an occasion.
-
Moderation: Don't dress intending to draw excessive or sexual attention to yourself.
-
-
Paul does not mean that women cannot dress nice. He tells them, like Peter, to “adorn themselves” with beautiful character rather than a beautiful appearance (1 Peter 3:3-4). In other words, if you're a woman, let your true beauty be in your character and your actions, not your outward appearance.
-
For, “As a ring of gold in a swine's snout, so is a lovely woman who lacks discretion” (Proverbs 11:22).
-
Verses 11-15
-
Leaders/pastors in a church must be married men—couples—with the husband in the position of power (as the head of his wife), and his wife in submission to him (1 Timothy 3:2,5, 11-12).
-
Men must first be leaders in their homes, setting good examples and having sound doctrine. After being tested, they may serve as overseers or elders in the church (Acts 15:22, Titus 1:5-6, 2:7-8, 1 Timothy 3:1-10).
-
-
Women should focus on conducting themselves well and teaching other women to do the same (Titus 2:3-5). In gatherings of the church, women are to maintain quiet submission to their husbands (1 Corinthians 11:2-3, 14:34).
-
A husband and wife can teach / hold teaching authority together (Acts 18:26), so long as the wife shows she is submitted to her husband by not interrupting, disagreeing with, or correcting him publicly.
-
Unmarried women should not usurp the authority of the adult/married men in the church by taking leadership in teaching over them (verses 11-14).
-
This policy, which shows respect for male authority, helps to encourage all women in the churh to be submitted to their husbands, which protects them from sin and deception (1 Timothy 2:14).
-
Any qualified woman may teach or pastor children and youth, as these are not "men". The prohibition of 1 Timothy 2 is against teaching men.
-
-
-
Verses 13-14. This instruction is based on the order of creation, not the culture of the time. Unmarried women are not to hold teaching power over men in the church for these two reasons:
-
1. Because Adam was formed first, men are to hold the authority in the home and in the church.
-
2. Today, because of Eve's fall to sin through deception, women are more vulnerable to being deceived than men are.
-
-
Verse 15. Understand that, as a woman, submitting to a husband, bearing children, and managing the home protect you from sin and deception (Genesis 3:16).
-
Do not neglect or avoid child-bearing and homemaking! These are important for women.
-
If you are not married, close fellowship and leadership from your church will provide protection.
