Verses 1-4
-
Verse 1. Jews need Jesus too.
-
Verse 2. Zeal for God won't save you, if you don't know and obey the truth about Jesus.
-
Zeal without knowledge is worthless. Make sure you grow in knowledge of the Word. Passion alone isn't enough to guide you!
-
-
Verses 3-4. No one will be saved by trying to be righteous by themselves. Only Christ makes us righteous.
Verses 5-13
-
It is hard to be saved through the law. A person has to obey everything in the law in order to earn righteousness through it (only Jesus obeyed the law perfectly).
-
But being saved by faith is simple. It's not far away or hard to obtain.
-
Being saved by faith is as simple as changing your heart—to believe in Jesus as your Lord and choosing to follow Him.
-
-
This Scripture is not about the sinner's prayer. Praying a prayer does not save you.
-
If a person has truly believed and sincerely confessed Jesus as their Lord, they will obey His words and repent from sin (James 2:20, Luke 6:46, Matthew 7:21).
-
Therefore, a change of heart proven by corresponding action is what saves a person.
-
-
Verses 14-15
-
People need to hear the gospel preached to them, if they will be saved.
-
Go and share the Word with others!
-
Verses 16-21
-
People believe after they hear the gospel preached to them.
-
But remember that even the Old Testament gave the Jews enough knowledge, but they often rejected that also.
