Daniel 6

Verses 1-17

  • In these verses, Daniel distinguishes himself among the administrators and satraps through his exceptional work ethic, diligence, and integrity. The text notes that Daniel was “faithful, and no error or fault was found in him” (v. 4). The decree forbidding prayer to anyone except the king for 30 days posed a direct challenge to Daniel’s faith. Despite knowing the consequences, Daniel continued his daily practice of praying three times a day toward Jerusalem. He neither hid nor flaunted his obedience to God, demonstrating quiet courage and unwavering devotion.

    • 1. Distinguish yourself through excellence and integrity. In your work-life, home-life, and overall conduct, stand out from unbelievers by showing blameless integrity and excellent work ethic. This honors God and will earn you respect from authorities.

    • 2. Obey God above all. While believers are called to obey governing authorities (Romans 13:1-7), Daniel’s example teaches that God’s commandments take precedence if earthly laws contradict His Word. Have the courage to put God's Word first, even if it means facing threats or persecution.

    • 3. Be innocent, and you will have faith. Daniel’s boldness in the face of danger flowed from a life of integrity and a clear conscience. A life free from guilt and compromise is fertile ground for growing unshakable faith. If you struggle to believe, work on your integrity, and this will strengthen your confidence. When we live with innocence and integrity, we can trust God to protect us from shame.

Verses 18-28

  • After Daniel is cast into the lions’ den, he is found alive and unharmed. Daniel attributes his deliverance to God, who sent His angel to shut the mouths of the lions because of Daniel’s innocence and faithfulness. In response, Darius issues a decree exalting the God of Daniel as the living God; and the conspirators who falsely accused Daniel are thrown into the lions' den, demonstrating the justice of God against those who plot evil.

  • Daniel’s deliverance highlights that God honors and protects those who trust Him and live in obedience. Even when faced with impossible circumstances, we can trust that God is sovereign and able to deliver us. Daniel’s unwavering faith not only led to his deliverance but also brought glory to God before a pagan king and nation. Similarly, when we live boldly and faithfully for God, our testimony will point others to Him.

    • Trust God completely in every trial, and live boldly for His glory, knowing that your faith and obedience will point others to Him, and especially in the face of adversity.
