This chapter is unique in that it begins and ends in what appears to be the first-person writing of Nebuchadnezzar himself. This entire was originally written, most likely by him, as a testimony to the glory of God as experienced in his humiliation and restoration.
Verses 1-33
-
As revealed, the great tree that provided food and shelter for creation symbolized Nebuchadnezzar's rule. But it was to be disrupted by a seven-year humiliation, where the king would go insane and become like an animal.
-
One year before the humiliation took place, Nebuchadnezzar was given a chance to humble himself by repenting of his sins and showing mercy to the poor. Because he did not repent, but seemingly forgot the dream and continued is self-exalting pride, humiliation seized him suddenly, and the interpretation of the dream was fulfilled.
-
The application of the passage is simple. Pride comes before a fall. Avoid the following behaviors. Pride shows, as it did in Nebuchadnezzar, through:
-
1. Continuing in sin even after being warned and urged to repent.
-
2. Praising or congratulating oneself for achievements.
-
-
-
Notice that although Nebuchadnezzar was told that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, he did not truly know this until he had experienced humiliation. Remember that many things are learned through experience, and some forms of wisdom come only from humbling hardships. Seek to learn from every experience!
Verses 34-37
-
Nebuchadnezzar learned a very important lesson through this trial. After he was restored, he came to understand the power of God—that He rules over all, forever, and that His will is done everywhere.
-
It's important for us to remember that even though the enemy works in this earth, God's will is still done perfectly. God's will is done in heaven, and it is done on earth. No one can stop God from doing what He wills, and no one can rightly criticize Him for His works nor accuse Him of wrong.
-
-
Therefore, remember that God is always in control. Trust His will in all situations, and encourage others to do the same!
