Genesis 18

Verses 1-8

  • This passage reminds us of Hebrews 13:2, which says, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”

    • Be kind, hospitable, and helpful to everyone that you encounter. You might be talking to angels, as Abraham was here.

    • Verses 6-8. When you do anything, move swiftly. Do not be lazy or slow, especially when you are helping or serving others (Genesis 24:18). Quick servants are good servants.

Verses 9-15

  • Verse 14. Nothing is too hard for God. All things are possible with Him (Matthew 19:26). Remember this always.

  • Verse 15. It is important to admit when you have doubted. It is not helpful to lie to yourself or pretend that you are in faith, when you are not.

    • God is always faithful to His Word no matter what, even if we are doubtful (2 Timothy 2:13). Trust in Him, not in your own ability.

    • God wanted Sarah to understand that when He says He will do something, He cannot be stopped, even if we are doubtful.

      • This teaches us to trust in God, not in our own ability. Put your faith in God; don't put your faith in your faith.

Verses 16-19

  • We are important to God, and we are His friends. We have an important role in His plans. For His plans, He will make sure to let us know what we need to know (Amos 3:7, John 15:15).

    • Be content to know what God has given you in His Word, and do not seek out knowledge that is beyond what you read in the Word (1 Corinthians 4:6, Acts 1:7-8).

    • Verse 19. Focus on being obedient to God's Word and helping your family to do the same.

Verses 20-33

  • The closer we get with God, the more our communication with Him will deepen. There is an ability to reason with God, like Abraham did, which we can grow into.

    • Keep growing in knowledge and obedience to the Word. Closer relationship will come.
