Verses 1-5
-
Paul is reminding the Corinthians to have their gift ready so that when others come to pick up their gift, they will be prepared.
-
If they were not ready, they would have been seen frantically pulling money together, which does not show diligence, preparedness, or joy. They would have felt pressured to pull money together, in which case they would not have been giving cheerfully.
-
-
Always have money set aside for giving. This way, you can give at a moment's notice and cheerfully. But if you only give when you feel obligated, you are not giving well.
Verses 6-10
-
In deciding how much you should give, be generous.
-
Also know that the more you use for others, the more God will give you, in His favor. But you won't have much favor if you are stingy. Why?
-
God gives to people who are sowers. He gives to givers.
-
-
In being generous, also have a good attitude. Give whatever amount you can give cheerfully.
-
It does not have to be tithe (10%) or anything similar. The amount can be anything you desire.
-
-
Verse 8. Know that God wants you to have an abundance, so that you can be an abundant giver.
-
Do not desire poverty or lack. Make it your goal to have more than enough, so that you can be a bigger giver and accomplish more for the kingdom with your resources.
-
Verses 11-15
-
Remember that, when you give, you are doing more than supplying a need. You are glorifying God and causing thanksgiving to Him to increase! Giving is important for God's glory, not just earthly needs.
-
When we are generous with each other and take care of each other well, it causes us to express more thanksgiving to God.
