Psalm 104

Verses 1-32

  • We learn here of God's power and total control over all creation. Everything from angels and wind to the oceans and clouds—God controls it all.

    • Verses 7-9. It's important for us to remember this because the earth is not stable all by itself. There was a time when God “rebuked” the waters and they completely engulfed the planet in the flood of Noah. And now there is a boundary that God has set for the waters, so that the earth is not flooded again. God could remove this boundary at any time, but in His mercy, He does not. Be thankful for this!

  • In addition, God personally takes care of every creature on land and in the sea, providing trees and vegetation for us and for all the animals, as both food and shelter. He also makes the sun rise and set.

    • Verse 23. In creation today, we, men especially, are meant to work at least until evening. As a man, remember that you are meant to work in the sweat of your brow (Genesis 3:19). Don't avoid hard work, but thankfully embrace it.

  • God's great wisdom is highlighted in this passage. God has made everything very good, and as complex as it is, He keeps it running smoothly. God gives us all life from His Spirit, and God can take it away. He can easily make the earth crumble and smoke.

Verses 33-35

  • Therefore, our response must be, while we still have the gift of living on earth, to praise God with thankful speech, godly conduct, and thoughts that are pleasing to God.

    • In everything, ask yourself what pleases God. What will be sweet to Him? Act from the mindset of always wanting to please God (2 Corinthians 5:9), and this will empower you.
